Timber Casement Windows: Versatile and Elegant

Timber casement windows are a popular choice for new builds, but their classic design means they work just as well in period properties. Whatever the style of your home, casement windows are well worth considering.

These graceful windows have been around since the 18th century and are still going strong today; indeed, they are one of the most familiar window styles in the UK, and with good reason. This is an extremely versatile window style so there is sure to be a solution that suits your needs.

What Are Casement Windows?

A standard casement window attaches to the frame with hinges along one side, which allows the window to open outwards like a door. This is the basic design but there are many ways to customise a casement window to your personal taste.

The window can be double-hung (two sections within the main frame) or single-hung (one section within the main frame). If you prefer hinges along the top (awning style) or bottom (hopper style) that’s no problem at all.

Another variation is a fixed casement window on one side of the main frame and an adjacent side opening pane. A smaller awing casement window can even be placed above the larger frame. The main pane can also be divided into smaller panes of two, four or six.

The Difference Between Flush or Lipped Casement Windows

If you look at a flush casement from the side, you’ll see the hinged section sits flush in the frame – nothing protrudes outwards. However, the lipped casement extends out and overhangs (lips) the outer edge of the main frame.

The flush casement is the original version as developed in the late 1700s. In those days manufacturing methods were primitive and windows often let in draughts and water. Lipped casements were developed to solve this problem as the protruding design allowed for a seal between the frame and opening section.

Happily, modern design and quality craftsmanship mean these issues are things of the past. You can be confident of exceptional energy efficiency, comfort and security when you choose flush casement windows.

The Best Style for Your Property

In terms of quality and functionality, there is no difference between flush and lipped casement windows. It may simply be down to your personal preference.

However, it’s important to note that as flush casement windows are the original style they tend to be the most appropriate choice for heritage properties. Of course, regulations vary so if your home is listed or in a conservation area you’ll need to check the precise requirements with your local authority.

Robust and Long Lasting

Timber has been around forever and it’s not about to go out of fashion now. Timber-framed windows give any home an ageless elegance and style. In addition, their toughness and durability add up to an investment that will last a lifetime.

Energy Efficient and Easy to Maintain

Wood is excellent at keeping chilly draughts at bay, even in harsh weather conditions so you can be confident your home will be cosy whatever the elements throw your way.

Your timber casement windows will need cleaning from time to time and an occasional wood stain treatment may be needed to maintain the colour (depending on the type of timber). These measures will be sufficient to keep your windows in top condition for many years.
